For Bishop Leon Benjamin, the Supreme Court overturning the Roe v. Wade ruling on abortion signals the return of power to We The People.
The congressional candidate for Virginia and senior pastor of New Life Harvest Church made the claim during the June 27 edition of his Brighteon.TV program “B-Alert News.” He described the conservative-majority Supreme Court’s overturn of the 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion ruling as a reason for jubilation.
“One of the events that have happened was the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Now many are out there celebrating; the majority, really, [is] out celebrating,” said Benjamin. “After 49 years of the decision … being overturned, there is a need for celebration.
A CNBC report said the high court overturned the landmark decision in a 5-4 vote. As a result of the June 24 decision, individual states now have the right to set their own abortion laws. Five conservative justices – Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett – voted to reverse the ruling.
“The Supreme Court … ruled that the issue of abortion should not be decided by unelected federal judges,” said the bishop. “It’s amazing how we got … a part of the [three] branches of government that literally says they have too much power.”
“Finally, there’s a branch of government that says ‘we have too much power [and] that power doesn’t belong to us.’ Basically, they said that ‘the people of the states, through their elected officials, should be deciding whether or not abortion is legal or illegal.’ That’s the right thing to do.” (Related: Supreme Court overturns Roe v. According to Benjamin, more than 20 states have passed laws banning abortion. This, he argued, encapsulated the Supreme Court emphasizing that it does not have the power to decide on the legality of abortion.
“The power is in the people – We The People – through their elected representatives.”
“We’re in a free country, of course, and people have a right to do what they do – but without putting fear and harm in others,” said the Virginia congressional candidate. He mentioned various attacks on pro-life pregnancy centers done by abortion activists prior to and after the overturn of the 1973 ruling.
“There have been some places where people are putting all types of graffiti on health care centers. Some have put in hexagrams … and all types of flagrant messaging saying that ‘if abortions are not safe, neither are you.’ I mean, this is where we are right now in 2022.”
Benjamin commented: “Yes, we’re in a free country [with] free speech. But when it comes to trying to put fear in me because of what I think, that is demonic, that is of Satan.”
Despite this, the senior pastor reiterated that women seeking abortions must not be criminalized.
“Very important: We are not criminalizing the women who go seek it. They are victims, and [they] need the power of prayer right now like never before. We want to pray that the Holy Spirit enlightens them [and] that the scales be removed from their eyes.”
He called on the viewers of “B-Alert News” to pray for “these women and men, fathers and mothers, who are going through this victimization of wanting to give their baby over to the state.”
