Half of all pregnancies are unintentional, and 60 percent of these end in abortion. This information, released by the United Nations Population Fund or UNFPA, also estimated that 45 percent of abortion procedures are unsafe and contribute to up to 13 percent of maternal deaths.
UNFPA claimed that there are around 257 million women around the world who want to avoid pregnancy but are not using safe, modern methods of contraception. It also claimed that millions of women are choosing not to do so due to “side effects, myths, stigma and opposition from others.”
For women who do not want to carry pregnancy into full term, a new document from the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the “full decriminalization of abortion” and scrapping the laws and regulations that “prohibit abortion based on gestational limits” or “restrict abortion” on any grounds.
The WHO actually called for the removal of all restrictions on abortion under all circumstances. Women will no longer need approval from a doctor or nurse to have a termination, and pills for abortion medication can be rolled out by post.
These guidelines are all extraordinarily radical by every measure. This means that the world’s most influential public health organization now allows women to have abortions at any point. Additionally, the WHO wants women to get abortion pills delivered to their doorsteps while medical professionals are forced to participate in the procedures.
The UN welcomed the advice, saying that laws protecting babies in the womb constitute “unnecessary policy barriers to safe abortion,” without acknowledging that abortion itself is never safe for innocent children in question.
The 210-page WHO document, in its entirety, does not mention the ethical objections to abortion, even late-term. Instead, it calls for the full decriminalization of abortion, including laws that prohibit the procedure based on gestational limits.
The document also looks like it is a product of the abortion industry, with the WHO choosing 12 “external experts” to create their recommendations.
One of the experts include Dr. Dhammika Perera, the global medical director of Marie Stopes International, a U.K.-based abortion business that perpetrated 60,000 abortions in the U.K. each year.
Other experts include Dr. Laura Castleman of abortion organization Planned Parenthood Michigan, Karthik Srinvasan of International Planned Parenthood and Christina Zampas of the global lobby group, Center for Reproductive Rights.
Member of the British Parliament, Fiona Bruce of the All-Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group, said that the WHO report was “truly shocking,” noting that a viable human being could have his or her life ended up to the point of birth, while just moments later a similar action against a child could constitute a murder. Previous data from UNFPA also showed that many women feel they do not have full control over their own reproduction, while 23 percent say that they are unable to say no to sex.
UNFPA Executive Director Natalia Kanem said that the report is a “wake-up call,” adding that “the staggering number of unintended pregnancies represents a global failure to uphold women and girls’ basic human rights. For the women affected, the most life-altering reproductive choice whether or not to become pregnant is no choice at all.”
Further, the agency also said that the lack of healthcare and information contributes to the vast number of unintended pregnancies, as do contraceptive options that do not suit women’s bodies or circumstances. “By putting the power to make this most fundamental decision squarely in the hands of women and girls, societies can ensure that motherhood is an aspiration and not an inevitability,” Kanem said while ignoring the ethical issues that shroud the issue of abortion itself.
